Top 15 Beaches of Rhodes
Undoubtedly, the characteristics of the Rhodes Island are its attractions. And this is not accidentally! A huge number of sights are concentrated on a small island, and all of them are located so compactly that it seems that leaving one historical monument, you immediately find yourself in another, no less significant place. This conquers even the most prejudiced traveller. But, if you think that Rhodes is only archaeology, history and beautiful nature, you will be mistaken. Rhodes can easily compete with other destinations not only in the number of beaches and bays, but also in the crystal clear Aegean and Mediterranean seas. In 2022, the island of Rhodes ranked first in the number of Blue Flags in the entire Mediterranean.
At the very beginning, we will answer the main question of tourists: where are the best beaches in Rhodes? The answer depends on why you are going to Rhodes. It is also important to remember that the island is washed by two seas at once: the Aegean on West and the Mediterranean on East. So, if you are a fan of water activities such as windsurfing or kite surfing, then you should choose the west coast of the island. But if you prefer cosy sandy beaches, then you should definitely choose the eastern part of the island.
So, let us start our tour on the top 15 beaches of Rhodes Island. Ialysos and Ixia are the most organized beaches of the west coast of Rhodes, due to the fact that it stretches along Heraklidon Avenue where some of the largest hotels of the island operate. The beaches are pebble, while the waters deepen sharply. As this side of the Island is open to the winds, it is more suitable for surfing lovers. Elli beach is located on the northern coast of the island, in the centre of Rhodes town, in front of the Casino and the Aquarium and is characterized as the one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. It is a favourite choice for both locals and visitors to the island as it is a well-organized beach with easy access. The waters are crystal clear and usually calm since the beach creates a natural bay that provides protection from the waves. The coast is mostly sandy; however, in some places, and especially near the waterline, you will also find fine pebbles. In an environment of stunning beaches and world-renowned thermal baths, on the east coast of Rhodes you will find the relatively quiet area Kalithea. The well organized beaches, bays, coves and caves, where many locals prefer to gather, offer something for every member of the family. The tiny coves with their sculpted rocks and caves promise endless explorations for everybody. For more adventurous, scuba diving can be organized here. The coast in Faliraki is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful on the whole island – with a 4 km long sandy beach that covers the entire coast of the village. It is one of the most organized beaches on the island, with facilities for sea sports, umbrellas and sun beds, beach bars, restaurants, cafes and a Water Park. Besides here is the only organized nudist beach on the island. Outside the area of Faliraki there are 2 small picturesque bays. One of those is named after the famous actor Anthony Quinn and is ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling due to its underwater world, surrounded by rocks with lush vegetation and blue-green waters. The second one is Ladiko with fine sand and rocks. Afandou is the longest pebble beach of Rhodes, and it has many organized spots, with umbrellas, sunbeds and canteens. It is located on the eastern side of the island and is 22 km from the city of Rhodes and only 2 km from the village of Afandou and next to the famous Golf Afandou. One part of the beach is known as Traunou beach with the cave on one side. But since not everyone enjoys swimming in rocky or pebble bays, if you like sandy beaches, then Tsambika is for you. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Rhodes, with an endless stretch of fine golden sand, while along are many nice relaxed beach bars, in a row. Stegna is the beach of Archangelos village and is located on the east coast of the island. It’s a lovely secluded resort, popular with locals as well as visiting families and seniors. In general, it is a place suitable for a relaxing holiday, regardless of the age of the guests. The beach is sandy and pebbly and is 2 km long. The landscape is enchanting as in many places rocks emerge from the water creating small natural pools. You will find many taverns and local restaurant for food and seafood. Haraki is an old fishing village that has been transformed into a relaxed resort overlooking the crescent-shaped beach. The beach is pebble and attracts mainly couples and older families. The area is not particularly suitable for disabled people as it has little access for mobility vehicles. Next to Haraki, at approximately 2 kilometres, there is the second wanted sandy beach of the Island, Agia Agathi beach (Golden Sand), which is the best for families with children. You can get to this beach both from the sea, on rented boat, and along a dirt road in a rented car, since public transport does not go there. Lindos beach is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful on the island of Rhodes. And the point is not only in its natural beauty, but also in its location: it is located at the foot of the Acropolis of Lindos. This is a bay protected on both sides, so the sea here is calm and safe, ideal for families with children. Lindos Beach stretches for about 700 m. It is a wide coastline covered with golden sand. The beach is divided into two parts: Pallas Beach (on the right) and Megali Paralia – the central beach of Lindos. From other side of Acropolis, you will find the well-known Saint Paul Bay. The spot is ideal for a refreshing dip for young and old. The waters are crystal clear and surrounded by rocks, making it a great place for snorkelling. Don’t miss to visit a magical location at the southernmost tip of the island, Prasonisi. It is essentially a rocky island, connected to the rest of the island of Rhodes by a narrow strip of sand about a kilometre long. The two beaches that are formed, due to the winds, merge and cover the land, creating an image of unique beauty. The area is considered a paradise for surfing lovers, since strong winds blow there especially in July and August.
These are just the most famous beaches of the island. In fact, the island is full of many interesting secluded places that will not leave you indifferent!
